Drip for DAD: Brew a Strong Roast to Delight Your Dad
Drip for DAD: Brew Strong Roasts to Delight Your Dad
The problem is that the coffee my dad drinks is usually dark or medium roast, brewed with an espresso machine or automatic coffee maker. So, as a drip coffee enthusiast, how can I brew my dad's coffee using my preferred method? What techniques can be used?
Note: The following advice is guaranteed to work with Preeda coffee.
1. Grind to a Fine Sugar Level
Use the same grind size recommended in the Preeda drip method, such as CMD #20 or Timemore C2 #16.
2. Use Higher Water Temperature
Medium Roast = 90-92°C
Dark Roast = 92-94°C
Using hotter water helps extract caramelized sugars and oils, balancing the sweetness and bitterness. Dont worry about bitternessif the roast is well done, it shouldnt be overwhelming. If its too bitter or burnt, we can still balance the sweetness.
3. Keep the Brewing Time Under 3 Minutes
Use the same water-pouring technique as Preedas standard drip method. The goal is to maintain a steady water flow, keeping the total brewing time between 2-3 minutes. This will give you a balanced body and a smooth cup with great depth.
How to Choose Medium to Dark Roast Coffee for Dripping
No Burnt Oil or Rubber Smell
If the coffee smells like burnt oil or rubber, it means the roasting process was too aggressive or overdone, which could affect the quality of the coffee.
No Charred or Woody Smell in the Ground Coffee
A burnt, woody smell means the roast profile wasnt optimal. Such coffee may lack sweetness and feel dry or bland.
The Beans Shouldn't Be Charred
If the beans are blackened, the coffee likely has lost most of its flavor, leaving only bitterness.
Sweet Caramel Notes from Proper Roasting
A well-roasted coffee should have caramel sweetness, which helps build body and mouthfeel. You might notice hints of caramel or chocolate (from milk to dark chocolate), which indicate a quality roast.
Dark Roasts Can Still Have Acidity
It's a common misconception that dark roasts lack acidity. In fact, dark roasts can still have a good balance of acidity and sweetness, along with a roasted flavor that intensifies with the level of roasting.
Preedas medium to dark roasts can be brewed deliciously by drip methods!
Can Dad Still Drink Coffee?
Many older people were coffee drinkers before us, so we often worry if they should continue drinking caffeine as they age. While caffeine may impact sleep and heart health, and doctors may advise against it for those with heart conditions, its often safe for healthy individuals to enjoy 1-2 cups of black coffee per day.
Research shows that coffee has benefits in slowing brain aging, reducing the risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Studies following participants over many years have found that coffee drinkers have a lower risk of these conditions.
Most importantly, enjoying good coffee can enrich the daily life of elderly people in our homes, filling their days with small moments of happiness. A home becomes a sanctuary when those we love are content.
Lets fill our homes with love and joy through these simple pleasures.
